According to Joe Gonzalez: a good REALTOR® gives you advice that doesn’t always help the REALTOR®.
Some agents tell you what you want to hear, like listing your home for a ton of money, or promising to get you any house at any price, because it keeps them in the deal. A good agent cares about you, even when the honest answer isn’t the one you were hoping for.
Examples of honest advice
- “Don’t sell right now.” If you’re thinking of selling a second home or investment property and it’s not the right time, a good agent will say so, even though it means no sale for them.
- “Don’t buy this house.” If a home isn’t right for you, a good agent will tell you, even if it means more searching.
When an agent is willing to talk you out of a deal, that’s a strong sign they’re not just looking for a sale.
Why distressed sales happen
The team has seen sellers forced to sell at a loss. Common reasons include:
- Bad timing, buying at the market’s peak
- Low interest rates that made carrying multiple properties seem easy
- Bad advice, buying because “everyone’s buying”
- Fear of missing out
Honest advice up front helps you avoid ending up in that position.
