Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services: Help for Indigenous Home Buyers in Niagara
The Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS) has offered a homeownership program that accepts applicants in the Niagara region. If you’re an Indigenous person hoping to buy your first home, this program may be able to help.
What is the program?
The OAHS homeownership program is designed to help Indigenous people in the Niagara region buy their first home. Eligible applicants may receive down payment assistance in the form of a forgivable loan.
Who may qualify?
There are specific eligibility criteria, which can include:
- Indigenous identity
- Income levels
- Assets
- Being a first-time home buyer
- Other program requirements
Program details, funding and intake periods can change, so check directly with OAHS for the current criteria and whether applications are open.
Joe has seen it work
Joe Gonzalez has helped friends successfully use this program, and he calls it fantastic. If you think you might qualify, he’s happy to answer your questions and help you through the home-buying side of the process.
A note for sellers: don’t list below your price
Joe also shares a frustration from the field: getting a counter-offer above list price. If you have a price in mind, list at that price. In a market with lots of inventory, buyers don’t want to play games, and tactics like this often make them walk away.
