Top 5 Reasons to Move to Welland, Ontario
What are the top five reasons to move to Welland, Ontario? First, where exactly is it?
Where is Welland?
Welland sits right in the middle of the Niagara Region. From Welland, you’re basically no more than 30 minutes from anywhere else in the region, and it borders five municipalities: Niagara Falls, Fonthill (Pelham), Fort Erie, Wainfleet and Port Colborne.
It’s one of Niagara’s larger cities, with a population of more than 50,000, and it was named one of Canada’s best communities by Maclean’s.
5. Recreation and leisure
You can’t think of Welland without thinking of the Welland Canal:
- Swimming, rowing and the Welland Dragon Boat Festival
- Skating and ice fishing in the winter
- Walking and biking paths along the canal
- Float Fest, the summer event that once set a Guinness World Record for the longest line of inflatables
- The roughly 6 km Merritt Island loop trail
Chippawa Park has baseball, beach volleyball, a pond for winter skating and a great sledding hill. And there’s always bowling for family nights out.
4. Amenities
- Welland Hospital, serving much of southern Niagara
- Seaway Mall and a revamped movie theatre
- Plenty of public, Catholic and French schools, plus Niagara College
- Welland Transit, with an app to plan your trip
- The Welland Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings, open year-round
- Great restaurants, from Italian to Greek to breakfast spots
3. Pizza!
Welland is known across Niagara for its pizza. There are so many great mom-and-pop pizzerias that if you poll the city, you’ll get a different favourite from almost everyone, and Joe, a.k.a. @PizzaReviewJoe, has tried a lot of them.
2. A city with vision
Welland has changed a lot over the years. Many of the big factories that employed thousands are gone, but today the city is open for business, with residential growth, thousands of new homes being built and new businesses moving in.
1. Affordability
Welland is still a great place to get into the real estate market. Compared to neighbouring Fonthill and many larger cities, you’ll find well-priced homes and plenty of new housing developments.
